Madagascar’s Ultimate Photography Experience!

We connect passionate people to exceptional experiences.

Madagascar's Iconic Endemic Wildlife

Join us in Madagascar for one of our most requested wildlife adventures of the year! This extraordinary island, teeming with endemic biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth, promises an unparalleled photography experience. Our workshop takes you to Madagascar’s most captivating locations, including the lush Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, the serene Palmarium Reserve, and the iconic Berenty Reserve. Each destination offers unique opportunities to capture Madagascar’s remarkable endemic species—especially its famed lemurs—in their natural habitats.

Berenty Reserve

Unlike Madagascar’s dense rainforests, Berenty Reserve offers a semi-arid landscape filled with towering cacti, ancient baobabs, and the distinctive 'spiny forest' of southern Madagascar. This 200-hectare reserve is a sanctuary for six species of lemurs, including Madagascar’s famous ring-tailed lemurs and the lively Verreaux’s sifakas, known for their playful, ground-hopping behavior. Berenty also supports the largest colony of Madagascar fruit bats in the south and an impressive array of 103 bird species, with 56 breeding within the reserve. With its high biodiversity and dramatic landscapes, Berenty Reserve provides wildlife photographers with a unique chance to capture the rich and enchanting wildlife of Madagascar.

 Andasibe-Mantadia

Our journey continues at Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, a lush haven combining the forests of Mantadia with the Analamazoatra Reserve, where indrithe largest lemurs—can be seen up close. This biodiverse area is home to nine lemur species, including the brown and bamboo lemurs, plus nocturnal varieties like the eastern woolly lemur. The nearby Mantadia forest adds sightings of the black-and-white ruffed lemur and diademed sifaka. Known for a world record number of frog species, Andasibe-Mantadia is best explored on night walks, revealing vibrant frogs and chameleons, as well as over 100 bird species. A photographer’s dream, the park offers a glimpse into Madagascar’s unparalleled wildlife and natural beauty.

Palmarium Reserve

Our photo safari culminates at the secluded Palmarium Reserve, set along the peaceful shores of Lac Ampitabe in the Pangalanes Canal. Spanning 50 hectares of littoral forest, this reserve is famed for encounters with the elusive Aye-Aye, best observed up close on a small forested island where they come to feed on coconuts—a thrilling experience for photographers. Amidst trails lined with palms, orchids, and pandanus, you’ll also encounter indri, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, Coquerel’s sifakas, and introduced black and crowned lemurs. With its flat, easy trails and approachable wildlife, the Palmarium offers unmatched opportunities to capture Madagascar’s unique species in an intimate, natural setting.

Private Charter Flights

To maximize your time with Madagascar’s incredible wildlife, we’ll begin our journey with a private charter flight directly to Berenty Reserve, bypassing the long, rugged drives that can otherwise consume full days on undeveloped roads. This exclusive access lets us dive straight into capturing the region’s rare species amidst dramatic landscapes—an experience only Backcountry Journeys can offer. With expert guidance from professional photographers and local naturalists, you’ll receive hands-on coaching to bring Madagascar’s unique biodiversity to life in your images. By the journey’s end, you’ll take home not only excellent photographs but also a deep connection to this extraordinary island and a story of true adventure
