These long-requested Southeast Asia photo workshops reflect some of the most compelling feedback we hear from our community.
Built in collaboration with trusted local partners, each journey offers a rich mix of landscapes, culture, and wildlife, along with signature experiences such as a private Phinisi boat in Komodo and thoughtfully arranged cultural photo opportunities.
They emphasize access, timing, and flexibility, creating a highly productive experience with a wide range of photographic opportunities.
While distinct in landscape and culture, both journeys are connected by exclusive access, thoughtful pacing, and Backcountry Journeys’ signature approach to photography-focused travel. These experiences reach beyond the familiar, offering time in remote regions, meaningful cultural moments, and opportunities that reward patience, awareness, and presence.
With small groups, expert instruction, and every logistical detail handled end-to-end, you’re free to focus fully on creating your strongest work. Behind the scenes, our team is constantly thinking about light, timing, and the subtle details that transform a great destination into an unforgettable photographic experience.
Two Distinct Photographic Worlds
Vietnam and Indonesia offer two distinctly different photographic worlds, one shaped by culture, rhythm, and human connection, the other defined by scale, geology, and extraordinary wildlife.
Together, they give photographers the freedom to choose between intimate storytelling and epic, cinematic imagery, without sacrificing depth, access, or intention.
Rare Access, Thoughtfully Earned
Both journeys extend well beyond familiar viewpoints, focusing on places and encounters that are made possible through trust, patience, and strong local partnerships.
Whether photographing daily life in remote communities or standing at the edge of volcanoes, access is purposeful and unhurried, giving images the time and space to unfold naturally rather than being rushed.
Built Around Light and Timing
Each itinerary is designed for photographic conditions first. Sunrise starts, flexible days, and the freedom to linger ensure you’re working with the best possible light and atmosphere.
This approach allows you to return to scenes, refine compositions, and capture moments as they truly evolve.
Expert Guidance, Seamless Execution
Small groups and hands-on instruction provide meaningful, in-the-field support, while Backcountry Journeys manages every logistical detail, from transportation and lodging to permits and local coordination.
The result is a rare balance, deep immersion in complex regions paired with the ease, confidence, and focus required to create your strongest work.

Start Location: Hanoi, Vietnam (HAN)
End Location: Da Nang International Airport, Vietnam (DAD)
Day 1 – Arrive in Hanoi (D)
We'll arrive in Hanoi today and get settled into our hotel before we meet up in the evening for a casual orientation and group dinner. It’s a good chance to unwind after the flight, get to know everyone, and chat about the adventure ahead.
Day 2 – Hanoi to Cao Bang (B,L,D)
This morning we’ll hit the road and head north toward Cao Bang. It’s a beautiful drive through rural Vietnam — rice paddies, mountain views, small villages, and lots of moments worth pulling over for with our cameras. We’ll take our time, stop for food and photos along the way, and reach Cao Bang by evening to rest up for the days ahead.
Day 3 – Ban Gioc Waterfall & Phong Nam Valley (B,L,D)
We’ll get an early start to photograph Ban Gioc, one of Vietnam’s most incredible waterfalls, right on the border with China. Depending on conditions, we might explore some viewpoints or catch locals working along the river. Later, we’ll stop by a hillside temple before heading into Phong Nam Valley for late afternoon light — rice paddies, limestone peaks, and quiet rural life all blending into one of the most photogenic landscapes in the north.
Day 4 – Phong Nam & Vinh Quy Hill (B,L,D)
Morning mist often drifts through the fields here, so we’ll make the most of it for some atmospheric landscape and drone shots. The rest of the morning is all about capturing daily life in the valley — local farmers, water buffalo, and traditional homes. In the afternoon we’ll move toward Vinh Quy Hill, where terraced fields unfold beneath us — a perfect spot for golden hour and sunset photography.
Day 5 – Back to Hanoi (B,L,D)
After breakfast we’ll start our drive back to Hanoi, keeping things flexible for spontaneous photo stops along the way. It’s a nice transition back toward the city — the scenery shifts from rugged mountains to green lowlands. We’ll spend the night in Hanoi before continuing our journey south.
Day 6 – Hanoi to Viet Tri via Craft Villages (B,L,D)
Today’s all about color and culture. We’ll visit a few of the region’s traditional craft villages — maybe the famous incense village where bright red and yellow incense sticks are laid out to dry, or the bamboo weaving village where every courtyard is filled with texture and pattern. We’ll also stop in Duong Lam, one of Vietnam’s oldest villages, for a walk through its narrow lanes and ancient brick homes.
Day 7 – Viet Tri to Mu Cang Chai (B,L,D)
We’ll head toward the northern highlands again, starting with the Long Coc tea hills — a patchwork of perfectly rounded green mounds that look incredible in soft morning light. Later we’ll make our way to Tu Le Valley, where terraced rice fields fill the valley floor and climb the surrounding hillsides. By evening, we’ll arrive in Mu Cang Chai and settle in for a few days surrounded by some of Vietnam’s most stunning mountain scenery.
Day 8 – Terraces of Mu Cang Chai (B,L,D)
This is our full day in Mu Cang Chai — and it’s a photographer’s dream. We’ll be up early to catch sunrise from one of the best viewpoints, then spend the day exploring nearby villages, meeting local Hmong families, and photographing the intricate terraces that seem to stretch endlessly across the mountains. As the day winds down, we’ll finish with sunset from another scenic overlook before heading back for dinner.
Day 9 – Mu Cang Chai to Da Nang (B,L,D)
After breakfast we’ll make our way back to Hanoi for a short flight to Da Nang. The change in scenery is dramatic — from cool mountain air to the warm, tropical coast. We’ll check into our beachside hotel and take the evening to relax and enjoy the sea breeze.
Day 10 – Hoi An & Cam Thanh (B,L,D)
We’ll start early at Hoi An’s harbor to photograph the fishing boats returning with the morning catch, then wander the old town’s colorful streets and riverside alleys. Later we’ll visit the Cam Thanh coconut forest, where locals row traditional basket boats through narrow waterways. If time and weather allow, we’ll also head out to the Son Tra Peninsula to look for the endangered red-shanked douc — a striking and rare primate found only in this region.
Day 11 – Da Nang & Departure (B)
On our final morning, we’ll enjoy one last sunrise shoot along My Khe Beach, then a relaxed breakfast overlooking the ocean. After that, it’s time to pack up, say our goodbyes, and transfer to Da Nang Airport by 12 PM for flights home.
Most meals included – (B,L,D) denotes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Start Location: Bali, Indonesia (DPS)
End Location: Surabaya Juanda International Airport, Indonesia, Indonesia (SUB)
Please Note: This is a Level 1 trip and is suitable for most fitness levels. Access to waterfalls involves short walks, typically around 10 minutes, sometimes using stairs. At Mount Bromo, the viewpoint is just a brief 5-minute walk from the parking area. In Komodo National Park, there are two optional hikes: a 20–30 minute walk to the Padar Island viewpoint and a longer 40-minute walk up Gili Lawa Hill. Both hikes are entirely optional—guests may choose to relax on the beach, photograph deer, or fly drones instead.
Day 1 – Arrival in Bali (D)
Arrive in Bali and transfer to our peaceful resort in the Sidemen region — a lush, rural area surrounded by rice terraces and framed by the towering peak of Mount Agung. Take time to settle in, rest from your journey, and enjoy the quiet rhythms of the Balinese countryside before we meet for dinner/orientation in the evening.
Day 2 – Rice Terraces and Mount Agung (B,L,D)
We’ll rise early to catch the first light spilling over the dramatic slopes of Mount Agung, photographing the intricate patterns of Sidemen’s rice terraces as the landscape glows in soft morning light. The rest of the day offers time to explore nearby valleys, streams, and traditional farmland scenes surrounded by tropical vegetation.
Day 3 – Eastern Bali Landscapes (B,L,D)
Today’s sunrise takes us to another viewpoint overlooking Mount Agung, where flowers and rice paddies create endless options for compositions. Later, we’ll head east through rural villages, photographing the quieter corners of the island — where daily life unfolds amid verdant hills, volcanic ridges, and hidden valleys.
Day 4 – Misty Lake and Hidden Waterfalls (B,L,D)
We’ll travel north to Tamblingan Lake, known for its tranquil waters and morning mist drifting across small temples and forests. It’s an atmospheric place to capture reflection and mood. In the afternoon, we’ll continue to one of Bali’s lesser-known waterfalls — tucked deep in the jungle — to photograph cascading water framed by lush greenery.
Day 5 – Journey to Komodo National Park (B,L,D)
A short flight takes us from Bali to Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo National Park. From here, we’ll board our private Phinisi boat — our floating base for the next few days of exploration. Once settled in, we’ll set out to photograph the surrounding islands and enjoy our first sunset on the water.
Day 6 – Padar Island, Komodo Island, and the Wild Coast (B,L,D)
We’ll begin the day with a sunrise hike on Padar Island, one of the most iconic landscapes in Indonesia. From the summit, the island’s rugged ridges and turquoise bays stretch out in every direction. Later, we’ll visit Pink Beach for its unique sands and clear water, and explore nearby reefs where manta rays are often seen gliding beneath the surface. Our adventure continues to Komodo Island for an afternoon walk to photograph Komodo dragons! We'll explore the park with local rangers and guides who will help us find them. Tonight will also be spent on our Phinisi boat around Komodo Island.
Day 7 – Flight to Sumba & Walakiri Beach (B,L,D)
After breakfast, we’ll disembark and fly to Sumba Island. Once we’ve checked into our beachfront lodge, we’ll venture out for sunset at Walakiri Beach — a stunning shoreline dotted with dwarf mangrove trees. During low tide, shallow pools form perfect mirrors, creating dreamy reflections as the sun dips behind the horizon.
Day 8 – Savannahs, Waterfalls, and Sunset Reflections (B,L,D)
At sunrise, we’ll explore one of Sumba’s dramatic highlands or coastal savannahs, where golden light sweeps across rolling grasslands and wild horses sometimes roam freely. Later, we’ll photograph Tanggedu Waterfall — often called the “Grand Canyon of East Sumba” — with its layered rock formations and turquoise pools. Weather permitting, we’ll return to Walakiri for another round of sunset reflections.
Day 9 – Flight to Java & Bromo Volcano Region (B,L,D)
We’ll fly to Java this morning and travel to the edge of the Bromo crater, where our lodge overlooks one of Indonesia’s most dramatic volcanic landscapes. If the skies are clear, we’ll have the chance to photograph Bromo beneath the stars — capturing the glowing caldera under moonlight or the Milky Way before dawn.
Day 10 – Sunrise Over Mount Bromo & Departure (B)
We’ll greet sunrise at one of the most spectacular viewpoints in all of Indonesia, watching as the first rays light up Mount Bromo and the surrounding sea of volcanic sand. After a final morning of photography, we’ll return for breakfast and make our way to Surabaya Airport by 2 PM for departures home or onward travel.
